Set during World War II in Britain, clothes rationing has left little opportunity for pomp or celebration—even at weddings. Grace Carlisle, tries in vain to repair her mother’s gown which is her only hope for a white wedding. Cressida Westcott is a renowned fashion designer who fell on hard times and appears at the local sewing circle. Cressida’s spirit and ambition mobilizes the village women into action, and as a result they find themselves mending wedding dresses not only for local brides, but for brides across the country.
